De politie heeft op Gran Canaria een netwerk opgerold dat zich bezighield met oplichting. De bende heeft toeristen, die voornamelijk afkomstig zijn uit EU-landen, in totaal voor miljoenen euro’s opgelicht. Er zijn 28 arrestaties verricht.
De oplichters boden de Europese burgers een lidmaatschap aan van een vakantieclub. Dit lidmaatschap zou grote voordelen bieden en recht geven op hoge kortingen op reizen naar elk willekeurige bestemming in de wereld.
Om lid te worden, moesten de aspirant-leden tussen de 1.000 en 10.000 euro storten op bankrekeningen van de oplichters.
Wilde men echter gebruik maken van de dienstverlening, dan kwamen de leden erachter dat ze dit niet konden doen, of dat de dienstverlening niet overeenkwam met de oorspronkelijk gemaakte afspraken.
De maatschappij die opereert onder de naam “Design Vacation” is opgericht op de Seychellen en heeft Gibraltar als thuisbasis. Deze maatschappij beheert diverse vennootschappen en die worden beheerd vanuit enkele kamers in een hotel in Las Palmas.
De vertegenwoordigers van deze groep hebben diverse bankrekeningen geopend in diverse Spaanse provincies, waar zij het geld van hun slachtoffers incasseerden. De benadeelden komen uit diverse landen van de Europese Unie, voornamelijk uit Duitsland
De politie heeft in vijf acties, 8 luxe auto’s, bewijsmateriaal en € 60.640,= in contanten in beslag genomen. Ook zijn de bankrekeningen geblokkeerd, met een saldo van in totaal 372.783 euro.
